Top Tips : Ways To Collect Customer Feedback Via Instagram

If you have an active Instagram following, have you ever considered using your Instagram profile to collect customer feedback? Maybe you are already doing it but haven’t thought about it this way before.

If you want to turbocharge what you know about the people who follow you this top tips guide provides easy actionable steps which you can implement immediately to collect customer insights and increase engagement on your profile.

Why is Collecting Customer Feedback Important?

Understanding WHO is following your profile is the key to building engagement, growing your following and selling or generating more leads.

By finding out what type of content people enjoy and what they don’t like you can tailor your content so your followers see more of the stuff they love and less of what they can do without – which will ultimately lead to maintaining your audience and growing more followers who love your brand.

Instagram Insights – Qualitative Data

To understand more about your Instagram followers the best starting place is Instagram’s insights section – here you can discover a wealth of info at your fingertips all for free!

If you are new to Instagram make sure you have an Instagram Business account setup. If you have a personal profile setup and want to switch to a business account, go to “Settings” then “account” and then click on “”switch to professional account’ and Instagram will guide you through the setup process.

Once you have a business account setup visit the Insights Section where you will find top level data about your followers including:

Top Locations – Where your audience is based, broken down by top countries and cities.

Gender Split – broken down by male and female.

Age Range – what age range your followers are which can be further broken down by gender.

Average Time Followers Are engaging – days of the week and hours your followers are most and least engaging with your content.

Instagram Post Insights

If you want to understand more about individual posts go to the specific post (please note that if you switched from a personal to business profile post insights will only show on new content you publish, not historical content), click on the ‘View Insights’ to see the data relating to the specific post.

Insights data is categorised into likes, comments, shares and saves. Each of these elements shows how interested someone is in your content, if they have ‘saved” it or “shared it” with a friend it shows they really like the content and it is relevant so you can use this insight to create more of the type of content.

The Insights on Instagram are useful in providing quantitative data, however if you want qualitative data from your followers we need to start being more creative and in this next section we will share with you some of our top tips to mining for qualitative data.

How to Collect Customer Feedback on Instagram using Instagram Posts

There are two spaces within the platform where we can ask questions:

  1. Feed posts
  2. Stories posts

Feed Posts

Ask a question

An easy way to find out what your audience thinks is by asking a question in the image caption – as illustrated below. Your engaged audience should then leave feedback as a comment in the post.

A or B Style Image Carousel

Another way to find out what your audience think is by using the image carousel feature and creating a mini poll “what do you prefer a or b.

By asking a question not only does it help with engagement (which is key to making your content go viral on Instagram) but sparking a discussion with your audience makes them feel involved with your brand – humanise your brand and strengthen your community.

Instagram Stories

Stories have exploded in popularity and Instagram regularly launch new story features to drive engagement. Here are some of our favourite ways of using these features to collect qualitative insights from your audience.

Question Sticker or Poll

The Question Sticker or Poll provides the opportunity to ask direct questions and collect feedback from your community. You could then use these insights to help craft what future content you should publish.

Answer Questions

You can also ask your community to ask you questions which you can then either reply to each question privately in your Direct Messages or turn it into public Q+A content.

Quiz Sticker

The Quiz Sticker works like a mini survey and allows you to gain more detailed insight into a topic.

Slider Sticker

The Slider Sticker is another tool for collecting quick data and can be great for product based brands who want to know how much their followers love a product

DM Me Sticker

The final feature is the DM Sticker, this does what it says on the tin and allows people to direct message you and creates one on one conversations with your community.
